1948-2020
David Borenstein was considered by many to be the artistic reincarnation of Rembrandt.
Born in the medieval city of Ligniza, Poland in 1948, David Borenstein began to draw at age 6 and by age fifteen was painting with oil paint. In 1970, he graduated from the Newark School of Fine Arts. The following year, he moved to Florence, Italy to began his search for knowledge that would eventually lead him to become a master painter in the Renaissance style.
He spent much of his time in Italy drawing portraits outside the Uffizi Museum. Early the following year in 1972, he moved to Austria where he studied at the Vienna Academy. He then returned to the United States to study at the Art League of New York. While there, he studied under the American artistic icon Frank Mason as well as the great David Leffel. During this time, as he continued to hone his technique, Borenstein was able to secure permission to copy over ninety paintings directly from the works of various Masters in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the British National Gallery in London.
In 1999, David studied with the great Norwegian master, Odd Nerdrum in Oslo before making his way back to Florence, Italy where he studied at the Florence Academy of Art from 2000 to 2001.
In the thriving artist town of Taos, New Mexico, David taught workshops and private lessons to the next generation of artists imparting the wisdom, secrets, and techniques of the Old Masters. Between teaching and painting in his Taos studio as well as plein air, he often traveled to India, Nepal, Thailand, Israel, and Florence for new inspiration.
He died in Taos, New Mexico on July 5, 2020.
Borenstein fell in love with the work of Rembrandt, rediscovering his techniques and focusing on portrait work, which he felt captures the soul of the individual.
(Above is a self-portrait in the Rembrandt style)
"Cancer brought me clarity, the question of my existence became what kind of person do I want to be for the rest of my life?" he said. "The answer is I want to be more gentle with others, and a better person to myself. I almost left this world twice. Every moment right now is ever more present. I am painting with brighter colors, and I'm loose with the paint, it's nice to be so free."
